In the later years of Manly Wade Wellman’s career, his success became largely associated with his horror writing, first from Weird Tales and later in the pages of Fantasy & Science Fiction. New readers might have thought he had only written of curses, monsters and Silver John with his silver string guitar. But horror was only about a third of Manly’s out-put. The rest was Science Fiction and later even Sword & Sorcery. Like Fritz Leiber, Wellman was a true writer of SF/F/H, a gifted Fantasy-creator, and like Leiber he was awarded the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement Award. He would also receive a Pulitzer nomination for his non-genre work.
Here you will find a bibliography of Wellman’s genre writing, his stories from Hugo Gernsback’s Wonder Stories, Thrilling Wonder (which he wrote for as often as he did Weird Tales), Astounding Science Fiction (he sold to Tremaine but not many for John W. Campbell), Startling Stories (where he wrote one of the Captain Future novels), Planet Stories and other magazines. He also wrote comics for Fawcett and DC. His story “Elephant Earth” (Astonishing Stories, February 1940) reappeared as “The Reign of the Elephants” in Strange Adventures #11 (August 1951). We hope this bibliography helps you to explore all the work of this amazing writer.
