From the THE INTRODUCTION
The Swords of Fire anthologies have not taken a straight path. The first came out in 2010. It had to wait eleven years for a companion volume in 2021. Number Three waited three more years to appear, in 2024. It has only been two years for this fourth volume. So we are getting better. I’d like to think that August 2027 will give you Volume Five. And every year after that. (We’ll see.)
What hasn’t changed over the years is the principle behind the books. Sword & Sorcery is best when it has a little elbow room. Stories between 15,000 and 30,000 words. The novella is, in my opinion, best. (I did do a round-up post at Dark Worlds Quarterly on this subject. I spoke with dozens of S&S and Fantasy writers. My final conclusion, is S&S writers like ALL lengths and aren’t much help here.)
