Conan the Barbarian will always be Robert E. Howard’s top dog but there are those of us who enjoy Kull just as much. (In Robert Bloch’s case, more.) Kull has had several short-lived series and mini-series over the years though he never seems to be able to get past twenty issues or so. Here are some of my favorite Kull covers from the early 1970s to2012.
Marvel – Kull the Conqueror 1971-1973

Marvel – Kull the Destroyer 1973-1978

Marvel- Kull and the Barbarians 1975 – paintings by Michael Whelan

Marvel – John Bolton 1980/1982

Marvel – Kull the Conqueror – 1983-1985

Blackthorne – 1989

1997 film starring Kevin Sorbo

Dark Horse- Kull – 2008-2009

Dark Horse – Various Mini-series – 2009-2012

Whenever I get into a discussion with somebody about Robert E. Howard and Kull comes up, the other person will usually say something like; “Oh, he’s just Howard ripping himself off.”
Me: “What do you mean?”
“Well, Kull is just a copy of Conan, isn’t he?”
Me: “Have you read any of the Kull stories?”
“No.
End of discussion.
Not possible. Kull came first.
