From the INTRODUCTION

RAGE m a c h i n e Books began a little series called Swords of Fire back in 2010. The idea was to offer longer Sword & Sorcery tales with one illustration a piece. The second volume waited awhile, until 2021, with Swords of Fire 3 in 2024. Fifteen years later and we are getting ready to publish Swords of Fire 4 this Summer. The books have been popular, and even that first volume, despite being fifteen years old, still sells regularly.

We toyed with the idea of applying the SoF format to other genres, thinking a book of Space Operas would work well in the same vein. So….Ships of Steel, hopefully the first of a running series, and no, we won’t wait eleven years for a second book. (The other one is a Weird Westerns book called Devil’s Gulch, cooking now as we speak…)

I suppose I should mention that space-faring captain Sudana and her silvery sidekick, Zaar, from my story, “The Hidden Heart” appeared in four other stories in my collection Whispers of Ice and Sand: Space Westerns. The star of Jack Mackenzie’s “The Price of Redemption”, Solis DeLacey, had an entire novel dedicated to her, The Mask of Eternity. You don’t have to have read these to enjoy this book. These stories stand on their own. But if you find these two space-traveling women interesting you can always check out those other books. We still sell both, of course.

Preliminaries are complete, now the ships of steel can take off..and hopefully, entertain you with some action, adventure and cool ideas. And what better place in a book with this title than with a guy named Steel…
