From the latest Sword & Sorcery Magazine:
Sword & Sorcery is a flexible athlete of a subgenre. Unlike the staid Historical Romance or creaking Cozy Cat Mysteries, S&S can be so many things to so many people. The reason for this is how it was created. It was born out of frustration.
Robert E. Howard was the father of Sword & Sorcery. He didn’t create Fantasy. That goes back to the beginning of time when some human-like being wondered about the stars outside their cave. Even modern Fantasy starts with William Morris and George Macdonald in the 1890s. Tolkien was reading these guys, and others like E. R. Eddison, and coming up with lengthy treatises on Elvish languages.
